Last year, Brian Albright, former full-time and current adjunct professor in the College of Business and Management, moved his wife and children to Kenya to engage in cross-cultural missionary work. This past summer he committed to another year.
HIU students know that in the pursuit of academic achievement and self-fulfillment, our lives can take a new direction. Albright is no stranger to this feeling, stating that this is “[a] mission that’s been developing in my life for several years.”
Albright’s expertise is being used full-time as the Director of Business Development for Living Room International in Kenya. Living Room International is a non-profit Christian organization founded in 2009. It is a hospice ministry, meaning it offers end of life care. Currently, the care is offered free of charge, and while Albright is building a second center, he is also checking the feasibility of a fee structure. “We believe that there are Kenyans who will and are able to pay for hospice care,” he said.
Albright’s passion for teaching, business, and being a living example of God’s love were what lead him to this role and are what continue to guide him forward. “I love teaching and I still get to teach online,” Albright said. He noted how he enjoys being able to actively engage in business practices alongside teaching these concepts. “I really enjoy the process of learning and being in new and exciting places,” stated Albright.
Aside from the allure of living overseas and working with this ministry, Albright stated the challenges that come with this new role. One of the greatest hurdles that he finds himself overcoming is communication. Albright stated, “You have to earn the right to communicate and question certain things, especially if they’re cultural in nature.”
Albright is hopeful and excited for a bright future with this organization and his family’s life in Africa.
